Bird control in orchards |
|
|
Three species of black cockatoo are native to south-west Australia and two species - Baudin's and Carnaby's black cockatoo - are known to enter orchards and feed on crops. Both species are classed as threatened and therefore protected under the Wildlife Conservation Act 1950. Orchardists are required to use non-harming methods, including scaring, to prevent damage to their crops. The Black Cockatoo/Fruit Protection Technical Advisory Committee developed Best Practice Guidelines for Bird Scaring in Orchards to protect the birds, the crops and the interests of neighbours who might be affected by the noise used to scare the birds. The committee also developed an information pamphlet for neighbours, a checklist for orchardists and a letter that orchardists can complete and send to their neighbours. Downloads
