First formed in 1969, the Roadside Conservation Committee (RCC) was established by the WA Government. Its terms of reference are to co-ordinate and promote the conservation and effective management of rail and roadside vegetation for the benefit of the environment and the people of WA. The current RCC was formed in 1985 under the auspices of the Land Resource Policy Council in the Department of Premier and Cabinet but is now located in the Department of Environment and Conservation's Species and Communities Branch.
The RCC is jointly funded by Main Roads Western Australia and the Department.
The RCC is comprised of 13 members representing relevant agencies and the community and is chaired by the nominee of Department's Director of Nature Conservation.
Membership of the RCC:
- Department of Environment and Conservation
- Main Roads Western Australia
- Department of Agriculture and Food (WA)
- Fire and Emergency Services Authority of Western Australia
- Telstra
- Western Power
- WestNet Energy
- WestNet Rail
- Local Government Authorities (2 elected and 1 professional officer)
- Greening Australia Western Australia
- Wildflower Society of Western Australia
- Conservation Council of Western Australia
The objectives of the RCC are to promote the protection and enhancement of native vegetation on rail and road reserves; to provide information to government, and community on the importance of road and railside vegetation; and to develop an understanding of the ecological processes controlling roadside vegetation. It is anticipated that through this it will be possible to devise better methods of planning and management of rail and roadside corridors.
The RCC seeks to facilitate communication between various agencies and community groups involved or interested in roadside management/conservation
