The Yoorrooyang Dawang Regional Park Council was established in 2006 following a land-mark agreement between the State of Western Australia and the Miriuwung Gajerrong Traditional Owners of the north-east Kimberley.
The agreement, known as the Ord Final Agreement, provides for a range of benefits to the Miriuwung Gajerrong people, including joint management of six (6) conservation areas totaling some 160,000 hectares.
Yawoorroong Miriuwung Gajerrong Yirrgeb Noong Dawang Aboriginal Corporation (MG Corp) will hold freehold title over the conservation areas, which will be leased back to the State under a joint management arrangement between the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) and the MG Corporation.
The Role of the Park Council will be:
- to facilitate the development of a Parks Management Plan,
- develop local Indigenous training and employment opportunities, and
- on-going management of the Conservation Parks.
