The Department of Environment and Conservation's WILDCARE Helpline can receive up to 30 calls a day about stranded or injured animals. People who find sick, injured or orphaned native animals, such as parrots, kangaroos, bandicoots, seabirds, sea mammals, woylies or possums; on the sides of the road, in parks, suburbs, paddocks and forests, are often very distressed because they don't know who to call for help.
The WILDCARE Helpline operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, diverting to after hours numbers at nights and weekends, to provide immediate assistance. Volunteers handle telephone inquiries and refer callers to one of 340 registered wildlife rehabilitators who take care of the animal before releasing it back into its native habitat.
