Categories and Functions of the Marine Reserves Vested in the MPRA

The purpose of a marine management area is for managing and protecting the marine environment so it may be used for conservation, recreational, scientific and commercial purposes.

A marine management area is explicitly for multiple use. The uses and sustainable management objectives for each marine management area are specified and described in a management plan.

Zone categories for marine management areas are not specified in the legislation as they are for marine parks, although there are provisions in the Act for any part of a marine management area to be classified to give effect to the purposes of the reservation.

WA has two marine management areas, totalling approximately 145,232ha in area, which are vested in the MPRA. These are:

Barrow Island Marine Management Area

Muiron Islands Marine Management Area
