During 2004 CALM formed a mountain bike working group with members of the local mountain bike community. This group is developing guidelines for construction of mountain bike trails on CALM managed land and providing a communication link with the mountain bike community. Recently a representative from the International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) held a workshop with CALM staff, mountain bikers and other organisations on trail construction techniques. Some new trail sections were constructed at the Goatfarm during this workshop.
Building of mountain bike trails and trail technical features (TTFs) by members of the public on CALM managed lands is illegal and can be hazardous for the inexperienced or unwary. The Department has a duty of care to ensure that trails and structures developed on CALM managed lands are safe for all users. Some of the structures have been located within National Parks and other areas are unsafe and could cause serious injury to users. These structures will be removed by CALM staff and rangers.
Some of the tracks and TTFs built illegally have been constructed in areas of high conservation values and/or are inconsistent with the management plans for that area or National Park. Trails and structures found in these areas will or have been removed. In the meantime CALM and mountain bikers are looking to provide alternatives.

Tracks & Trails for the Future
CALM and the Western Australian Mountain Bike Association have recently secured funding to commence the development of a world class mountain bike trail system possibly to be located at the ‘Goatfarm’. The work done during the IMBA workshop was just the beginning of this project. Cross country and other styles of riding will also be catered for. Other new trails or the upgrading of existing trails is also planned. You can help by being part of this exciting project – and by not building your own illegal trails.
