Bush Rangers Western Australia is a practically based, on-the-ground program. The nationally accredited Manuals 1, 2 and 3 act as scaffolding to guide the Bush Rangers WA Units. Bush Rangers pursue terrestrial, aquatic and marine conservation, and participate in the biodiversity conservation work achieved by both the Department of Environment and Conservation and the greater conservation community of Western Australia. The specific projects they undertake are dictated by the individual Bush Ranger's particular interests, skills and knowledge of their local community and agencies and the local environmental issues.
When Bush Rangers complete the outcomes of Manual 1 (Level 1 Training), they are promoted to Ranger or Ranger First Class (see Badges and Insignia). On completion of Manual 2 (Level 2 Training), they are promoted to Senior Ranger or Ranger Section Leader. After completing the final Manual 3 (Level 3 Training), they are formally eligible to become Deputy Unit Leaders or Unit Leaders. Details of the training at each level are given on the pages 'Level 1 Training', 'Level 2 Training' and 'Level 3 Training', which can be found in the 'Related Items'.
