Invasive weeds targeted in West Kimberley

The Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) is reducing several populations of invasive weeds in the West Kimberley through intensive control programs in the region.

DEC officers spent 10 consecutive days during July and August controlling rubber bush (Calotropis procera) and hyptis (Lamiaceae hyptis) in the Millie Windie Valley in the King Leopold Range Conservation Park on the banks of the Lennard River.

Karratha facility ordered to clean up waste

The Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) has served a prevention notice on an abrasive blasting and metal coating company after it caused pollution at its Karratha facility.

Following ongoing complaints since 2004, DEC officers have attended the site and issued infringement notices on a number of occasions. They were prosecuted in 2005 for unreasonable noise and dust emissions.

Winning the battle against neem at Kununurra

Three quarters of the neem population in the Kununurra region has been controlled following a two year project to eradicate the invasive tree from the area.

Neem (Azadirachta indica) is a fast growing tree capable of out-competing native plants.

Modified penalty issued to Kambalda mining company

The Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) has issued a $12,500 modified penalty to a mining company in Kambalda for contravening its licence conditions under section 58(1) of the Environmental Protection Act 1986.

The penalty was issued after an investigation conducted by DEC's Goldfields Region identified that on 17 November 2006, the company failed to conduct visual inspections of its tailings storage area, located at its mining facility south of Kambalda, as required by its licence.

Cane toad found in Karratha

The Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) is again reminding the community to remain vigilant, following the discovery of a cane toad near a pond at a Karratha nursery.

The adult cane toad was discovered over the weekend by the nursery owners who captured the toad and alerted DEC officers.

Crocodile warning for Dampier and Karratha

A two to three metre saltwater crocodile has been seen near Hearson Cove, a popular swimming and picnic about 10km north of Dampier.

The Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) is warning Dampier and Karratha residents to be cautious and vigilant near waterways in the area.

Environmental experts to hold public workshop in Esperance

The Esperance community is being invited to have its say on the next stage of the ecological and human health risk assessment of lead and nickel levels in the town.

Independent environmental consultants Golder Associates will be holding a free public workshop next week to gather community feedback on the first stage of their work, which was released in September.
