Prescribed Burning Operations - Autumn 2008

DEC conducts a program of prescribed burning operations during spring and autumn each year. Prescribed burning operations are undertaken for a variety of reasons, including property protection, fuel reduction and biodiversity management.

These burns are carefully planned however they may cause some disruption to users. Where prescribed burning operations impact on the Track, temporary diversions will be put in place, including temporary campsites where necessary. Prescribed burning operations are dependant on appropriate weather conditions and as such, dates for operations are not available in advance.

The following sections of Track may be affected by prescribed burning operations during 2008. For your safety, follow onsite signage and directions from DEC staff.

  • (Map 3a - W_009) - Asquith Rd to Dee Vee Rd. (Includes Possum Springs campsite)

Collie Trailhead (Trail Information Board) temporarily removed

The Trailhead in Collie has been removed due to an upgrade of the Visitor Centre car park by the Collie Shire. For information and updates on the trail to the north and south of Collie please call the DEC Wellington District office on 9734 1988 or walk into the office on the corner of Wittenoom St and Atkinson St. (From the Visitor Centre walk west along Throssell Street and take the first road heading south). Prescribed Burning Operation - Autumn 2008 - Finished

All prescribed burns directly affecting the Bibbulmun Track in the DEC Perth Hills District have been completed.

Car access on track

Walkers are reminded that vehicles can only access the Track at designated points. These are marked on the maps and guidebooks as red or green car symbols. Other roads that lead towards the Track may be closed or have locked gates as they enter disease risk areas. Attempting to access the Track at non-designated points can spread disease or damage wildlife. Please stick to the access points marked on the maps and guidebooks.

Water

Even though we have had rain over the last few weeks, PLEASE use tank water sparingly. Campsites in the Perth Hills area are the most heavily used on the Track.

Wildlife

A possum and baby possum have taken up residence in (and near) Gringer Creek campsite. Please do not touch, encourage, feed or harm the possums and please make sure that all your foodstuffs are securely 'locked away' for the night. At night walkers are advised to remove all food items from packs, and hang them in food bags from the centre of the roof poles from a piece of string. Smearing insect repellent on the tops of bags and poles may help to deter the possum.

Western Power work on powerlines south of Mt Wells campsite (Map 2a)

Information from Western Power 3rd April 2008

Western Power work is continuing on powerlines south of Mt Wells campsite. The work will continue until late September 2008.

Signage on both the Bibbulmun Track and on Western Power's easement is in place. Work practices in this area are controlled by the project environmental management plan.

The Bibbulmun Track crosses the work area three times between Mt Wells and Chadoora campsites - once across Wells Form Road and twice across the powerline corridors that are being upgraded. Walkers need to watch out for construction vehicles and to exercise caution when crossing powerline corridors.

Water tank levels

Campsites in the Perth Hills area are the most heavily used on the Track. PLEASE use tank water sparingly.

Track Maintenance

Maintenance work will be carried out on the Track just South of Donnelly River Village, between Gregory Rd and Panda Rd. There will be a bobcat in the area for the work between 28th April and 2nd May.

Walkers please exercise caution around machinery and follow any directions given by DEC staff in the area.

Closure to Cascades Bridge

The walk bridge at the Cascades Recreation site (Map 5b) has been declared unsafe and is no longer available for walkers to use. The bridge was used as part of a walk trail to link the other side of the Lefroy Brook and also to link the Bibbulmun Track (not part of the Bibbulmun Track) from the Cascades.

Be advised that vehicle access to the Cascades Recreation site remains unchanged for visitors but walking access across the Lefroy Brook and linking to the Bibbulmun Track is now unavailable.

Prescribed Burning Operations - Autumn 2008

The fire season for the DEC Donnelly District was officially closed on Tuesday 22 April so any burns that were affecting the Bibbulmun track have been cancelled. This fire protection work will now be carried out at a time later in the year. Details of the next fire program will be posted here when they become available.

Big Brook Dam temporary road closures - UPDATE

Road works are continuing on the access road into the Big Brook Dam recreation site. Vehicle access to Big Brook Dam will remain closed to manage public safety until mid April 2008. When completed, sealed access will be provided from Pemberton to Big Brook Dam and will cater for coaches and long vehicles.

The Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) are currently upgrading and sealing a 2km section of the Karri Forest Explorer Drive (north of Pemberton) from just beyond the Hidden River Cafe entrance to the main car park at the Dam.

To manage public safety during road works, access to Big Brook Dam from Pemberton on the Karri Forest Explorer Drive will be closed just beyond the entrance to Hidden River Cafe / Winery. Please note access to the Cafe / Winery will remain open.

Alternative access to the northen end of Big Brook Dam as far as Casuarina Corner (near the picnic site) will be available via Pump Hill Road, Stirling Road, Tramway Trail and the Karri Forest Explorer Drive.

The vehicle access point near the dam wall (marked with a red car on Bibbulmun Track Map 5b and Southern guidebook p. 89) will not be accessible during this time. Walkers should use the Aboretum, west of the dam along Karri Forest Explorer Drive instead (also on Map 5b and Sth guidebook p. 89).

If you have any queries, please phone the Donnelly district office on (08) 9776 1207.

Beedelup Falls Access Road Open
